Chadwick Woods, a 7th grade student at St. Theresa Catholic School in Phoenix, and the son of Lillian and Keith Woods, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2012 Arizona National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.  Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s Bee winner.  School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.  In each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, and the U.S. territories, the National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The 2012 Arizona National Geographic Bee will be held Tucson Convention Center, Tucson, on Friday, March 30, 2012.

The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD”, and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he/she will represent Arizona in the national finals at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 22 – 24, 2012.  The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the Society.  The national winner will also travel (along with one parent or guardian), all expenses paid, to the Galápagos Islands.  The winner will experience geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the wildlife and landscape of Galápagos. National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild will air the final round of the 2012 National Geographic Bee, moderated by Alex Trebek, on Thursday, May 24 (to be followed on public television stations).  Please check local television listings for date and time in your area.

This is a paid internship opportunity. We are hosting two paid internships a semester; 10 hours a week, at a rate of $7.25 a hour.

Reguirements:

• Student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in communication, public relations, or marketing
• Creative thinker
• Strong computer skills
• Proficient in Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube
• Experience with blogging is helpful
• Digital video editing experience
• Self-starter

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Blog writing and editing with WordPress
• Podcast production
• Daily management of clients’ social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube)
• Scripting, and production of short videos (with Flip, or other digital cameras) using Adobe Premiere Elements
• Press release writing and distribution
• Radio and TV writing and production opportunities may exist
